Sutton Hoo

Mask / Helmet found at Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo - is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. On this site, a 6th and early 7th century cemetery were discovered.

One cemetery contained an undisturbed ship burial including a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artifacts of outstanding historical and archaeological significance. The artifacts are now held in the British Museum in London.

The site now has the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince's sword. This is your chance to Come face to face with your ancestors and find out a more.

Anglo-Saxon village

At West Stow, an Anglo-Saxon village was discovered and excavated. The village is thought to have been created c. 420-650AD and has been carefully reconstructed where it was found.

You can now explore this village and experience the conditions and atmosphere that may have existed in those times. You can smell the wood smoke, see the type of wildlife, crops, pigs and hens that were common in early Anglo-Saxon times.

Newmarket Racecourse

Horses racing at Newmarket Racecourse

Newmarket Racecourse has two courses - the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. Both are wide, galloping tracks used for Flat racing only. Between them they host 8 of British racing's 32 annual Group 1 races.

The course has a number of races through the year with the Rowley mile having meeting April to May and then again for Sept to Nov. Despite it's name the July course has meeting from June to August.

The course is also famous for the music nights that it stages. Superstars like Bryan Adams, Ronan Keating, Atomic Kitten, The Sugababes, Simply Red and Tom Jones have all played to sell-out audiences after racing on idyllic summer Friday evenings on the July Course.

Green King Brewery Tour

Beer pumps at Green King Brewery

A popular thing to do in Suffolk is to see how real beer is brewed using natural ingredients and traditional brewing methods.

The tour takes you through this historic working Brew House explaining the different stages. Afterwards you can enjoy tasting the different cask beers from their Brewery Tap. Green King IPA is one of my own favourite drinks and I'm envious of all those about to go on the brewery tour.

For anyone who is about to celebrate a birthday, retirement, stag or hen night the evening tour is a great way to start the celebration. However, please note that the tours get booked up in advance and it is important to contact them prior to your visit.

Canoeing the Bungay Loop

Map showing the Bungay Loop canoe routeCanoeing on the Bungay Loop

The Bungay Loop takes you along a stretch of the River Waveney known for its placid, crystal clear waters and easy navigation. Canadian canoes are the perfect choice for a leisurely paddle on a warm summer day and can be hired locally. The loop takes about three hours unless you stop off for a picnic or break.

Canoeing on the Bungay Loop is a great way to experience river life and you can combine a nature trail with a canoeing safari. Canoes have the advantage of being totally silent, allowing you to get closer to wildlife whilst enjoying the beautiful landscape. The stretch of river from Earsham to Ellingham is ideal for spotting wildlife and butterflies, otters, swans, kingfishers and herons are all regular visitors.

Landguard Fort

An aerial view of Languard Fort

Landguard Fort in Felixstowe has been an important part of the local defences for centuries helping to ward off invaders as far back as Tudor Times. It was originally designed to guard the entrance to Harwich and has been modified many times since then. During the Second World War, it became one of the balloon launch sites of Operation Outward, for attacks on Germany.

However, recently it has started to attract attention due to strange activities. Visitors as well as local people, have experienced unusual sightings in or around the Fort. The most common sighting is the image of a sailor looking out of the top right window (the side visible from the road). Most reporting's were in the 1990s, but occasionally there are still reports of lights at night and being "pushed" whilst visiting the top floors.

Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle is a magnificent 12th century fortress with a long and colourful past that has included periods were it was once the refuge of Mary Tudor before she became Queen in 1553. The castle has also been used as a home, Poorhouse, Drill hall, County Court and Regional defences during World War 2.

Today Framlingham is a grade 1 listed building owned by English Heritage and open as a tourist attraction for all to see. Visitors are able to walk along the walls and see some spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. English Heritage has also provided a self-guided audio tour to help you explore and discover the history of the castle and appreciate the finer points that are easy to overlook otherwise.
